Kontradiksi antara Tradisionalitas dan Modernitas dalam Novel Belenggu Karya AP dan Novel TKVDW Karya Hamka

Abstract

Contradictions between traditionality and modernity often appear in realist novels, such as in the novel Belenggu by Armijn Pane and the novel Tenggelamnya Kapal Van Der Wijck by Hamka. The goal of this research was to determine the type of contradiction between traditionality and modernity contained in the novel Belenggu and the novel Tenggelamnya Kapal Van Der Wijck.  The theory of literary conventions was used in this study, which took a sociology of literature approach.  The objects studied in this book are the novels with the title Belenggu by Armijn Pane and Tenggelamnya Kapan Van Der Wijck by Hamka. The results of the study prove that there is a contradiction between traditionality and modernity in these two novels. The contradiction in the Belenggu novel is found in the ideas conveyed by the character Tini who had advanced thinking in his day. Meanwhile, in the novel Tenggelamnya Kapal Van Der Wijck, the contradiction is seen when Zainuddin still proposes to Hayati even though his proposal is rejected because of the customs that Hayati's family still adheres to, and when the two fell in love.
