The Effectiveness of Assistance in Developing School Operational Curricula in Enhancing the Competencies of Special Education School Teachers in Manggarai

Abstract

The School Operational Curriculum (Kurikulum Operasional Satuan Pendidikan/KOSP) is a strategic component in the implementation of the Merdeka Curriculum. However, in practice, many teachers particularly those in special education schools still encounter difficulties in understanding and systematically developing it. This issue was also identified among teachers from four special education schools in Manggarai Regency, namely SLB A Karya Murni, SLB B Karya Murni, SLB Santa Damian, and SLB Negeri Tenda. This community service activity aimed to analyze the effectiveness of mentoring in developing the school operational curriculum to enhance teachers’ competencies in terms of both conceptual understanding and practical skills. The method employed was practice-based mentoring using a pretest–posttest design involving 40 participants. Data were collected through pretest and posttest questionnaires, as well as a process evaluation questionnaire. The data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics, including a paired sample t-test. The results indicated a significant increase in the average scores of teachers’ understanding and skills, from 1.9163 in the pretest to 4.4378 in the posttest. The t-test results showed a significance value of p < 0.05, indicating a statistically significant difference before and after the mentoring intervention. Furthermore, the evaluation of the mentoring process yielded a very good category score of 4.344. These findings demonstrate that practice-based mentoring is effective in improving teachers’ competencies in developing the school operational curriculum. Therefore, this mentoring model is recommended for continuous implementation and broader application across other educational institutions
