The The Effectiveness of Using Mind Mapping Technique on the Students’ Writing Skill in Descriptive Text at SMAN 1 Poco Ranaka

Abstract

Abstract. This study aimed to examine the effectiveness of the mind mapping technique in improving students’ writing skills in descriptive text at the eleventh grade of SMAN 1 Poco Ranaka. This research used a quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental design, which included an experimental group and a control group. The study involved 210 eleventh-grade students, and purposive sampling was used to select two classes: XI Bahasa 1 as the experimental class and XI Bahasa 2 as the control class, with 30 students in each class. The data was collected using writing tests, given as a pre-test and post-test. A scoring rubric adapted from Brown (2007) was used to evaluate students' writing. The results showed that the experimental class had an average pre-test score of 52.33 and a post-test score of 74.00, while the control class had a pre-test score of 52.67 and a post-test score of 66.67. The experimental class, which was taught using the mind mapping technique, performed better than the control class, which was taught using traditional methods. The t-test results showed a significance value of 0.001 (? 0.005), meaning the alternative hypothesis (H?) was accepted, and the null hypothesis (H?) was rejected. This confirms that the mind mapping technique is effective in improving students’ writing skills in descriptive text.
