Abstract

Pest attacks are a problem in sustainable agricultural development. In this study, the isolation and characterization of candidate entomopathogen bacteria were carried out. Entomopathogen candidate isolates were isolated from the rice phyllosphere and rice rhizosphere. Characterization was carried out including pH test, motility test, Gram test, oxygen demand test, sugar fermentation test (glucose and lactose), and catalase test. The isolation results obtained five isolates, namely FP1, FP2, FP3, RP1, and RP2. All isolates could not adapt to acidic pH (pH 3), while RP 2 isolates could grow well at pH 6-9. All isolates of candidates were non-motile. Gram test showed that all isolates were gram-negative and cocci-shaped and only FP1 isolates were bacilli. The oxygen demand test showed that the isolates were aerobic (FP1 and FP2), aerotolerant (FP3), and anaerobic (RP1 and RP2). The sugar fermentation test showed that RP1 isolate could utilize glucose and lactose. The catalase test showed that all the antifungal isolates were positive.
