Abstract

Pigs play an important role in the social, cultural, and economic life of the Manggarai community. However, the productivity of local pigs remains relatively low due to limited genetic quality, inadequate management practices, and suboptimal application of reproductive technologies. Artificial insemination (AI) and genetic selection are technologies with strong potential to improve genetic quality and productivity of pigs. This article aims to review the role of artificial insemination and genetic selection in improving the genetic quality of pigs in Manggarai. The method used was a literature review by analyzing relevant scientific journals, books, and research reports. The results show that artificial insemination enables wider utilization of superior boars, improves reproductive efficiency, and reduces the risk of reproductive disease transmission. Furthermore, consistent genetic selection contributes to increased productivity across generations. The integration of artificial insemination and genetic selection is an effective and realistic strategy for smallholder pig farming systems in Manggarai, supported by extension services, proper management, and sustainable technical assistance.
