Abstract

This study investigates the use of code-mixing in sermons by Pastor Kosmas Ambo Patan, SMM at mass at Poco Manggarai Parish. Using a sociolinguistic approach, this qualitative study examines the types and functions of code-mixing used by the pastor in his sermons. The study analyzes the language choice, frequency, and distribution of code-mixing, and explores the social and cultural factors that influence the use of code-mixing in this religious context. The use of code-mixing in sermons is an interesting and important topic for research, as it is a common phenomenon in multilingual and multicultural societies, and has significant implications for intercultural communication, language policy and planning, and language education. The study offers a valuable contribution to the field of sociolinguistics by providing a detailed and nuanced analysis of the use of code-mixing in a religious context, and its social and cultural implications. The analysis reveals that Pastor Kosmas Ambo Patan uses code-mixing as a communicative strategy to connect with his audience and convey his message more effectively. The code-mixing involves the use of Malay and Manggarai languages, and is motivated by several factors such as social identity, linguistic competence, and cultural relevance.
