Abstract

This study aims to examine the representation of poverty in the novel "Gadis Pesisir" by Nunuk Y. Kusmiana, using a literature sociology approach. Through a qualitative descriptive method, this study analyzes the language variety and register, speech acts and discourse patterns, narrative structure and point of view, and symbolism in the novel to identify how poverty is represented and its implications for social justice and equity. The analysis reveals that the novel portrays poverty as a complex and multidimensional phenomenon that affects various aspects of life, including education, health, and social status. The characters in the novel use different language varieties and registers based on their social class and education level, and their speech acts and discourse patterns reflect their power relations and attitudes towards poverty. The narrative structure and point of view of the novel highlight the challenges and opportunities faced by the poor, and the importance of social support and collective action in addressing poverty. The study contributes to the field of literature sociology by providing a detailed and nuanced analysis of the representation of poverty in the novel, and its social and cultural implications. The findings of the study have implications for policy and practice in the areas of poverty reduction, social justice, and human development.
