Abstract

This research is about two learning preferences, namely learning styles and language learning strategies, in a group of learners who come from Nusa Tenggara Timur (NTT). The research objective is to describe the types of learning styles and the types of language learning strategies they used when learning Indonesian in tertiary institutions. The research data were obtained from students' answers to the statements listed in the VARK version 8.01 learning style questionnaire and the Oxford version 7.0 language learning strategy questionnaire, which was adapted in the context of learning Indonesian as a second language. The results showed that NTT students, who took Indonesian language courses at a private university in Yogyakarta, had one dominant learning style, namely the Kinestetic-Auditory [KA] type, and four types of language learning strategies, namely cognitive, metacognitive, affective and social strategies.
