METAFORA DALAM TUTURAN RITUAL WUAT WA’I MASYARAKAT MANGGARAI: KAJIAN LINGUISTIK KEBUDAYAAN

Abstract

This study examines the metaphors in the ritual speech of the Manggarai society
perspective of Cultural Linguistics. This study aims to find the cultural metaphors and imagery
contained in the Ritual Speech of the Manggarai Society about Wuat wa’i. Two problems to be
explored in this study are the form of metaphors in the ritual speech about the Wuat wa’i and
the imagery contained in the ritual speech about the wuat wa’i. This research, located in
Manggarai, Flores, NTT, is a qualitative study. Research data is provided through listening
and note-taking methods with record, transcription, and interview techniques. The data
analysis method used is the referential equivalent method with the basic technique of
disaggregation as a differentiator of referents. The method used in the data analysis stage is
the method of matching with the determining elements.
The analysis in this study is guided by a number of linguistic theories and paradigms.
The main theory used is the Cultural Linguistics Theory of Gary B. Palmer. The results of data
analysis are reported informally and verbally described. The results of this study are ritual
speeches of the people of Manggarai who are rich in metaphors which include structural
metaphors, orientational metaphors, and ontological metaphors. Cultural imagery which is
constructed and communicated through verbal symbols, namely language in the ritual speech of the Wuat wa’i includes the unity/togetherness imagery, seriousness imagery,
respect/politeness imagery, pro-existence imagery, and trans-historical imagery.
